Unit 2.2 The Emotionally Intelligent Leader

Introduction:

In this unit we will explore emotional or interpersonal intelligence and how it is closely linked to effective leadership. As we saw in Unit 1.1 (Leadership vs management) leadership is about people rather than the technical aspects of the Head Teacher/School Principal’s role which are classed as management. As such, emotional intellect or the ability to develop active engagement with people and relationships is leadership.

The emotionally intelligent leader is able to motivate and engage staff and create a positive school culture where they are the role model demonstrating empathy, respect and a sense of belief in others. As you study the unit you will be asked to analyse and reflect on your own emotional competence and to explore ways of further developing yourself and your staff to create a school culture where emotions are used positively and purposefully to impact ultimately on student outcomes.

Objectives

By the end of this unit of study you will be able to:

  • understand the concept of emotional intelligence
  • identify your current strengths in emotional competence
  • know how an emotionally intelligent leader would act

  • have ideas and strategies to improve your emotional competent leadership
  • be confident to use a wide range of emotional intelligence competencies in your leadership

Implementation Task:

Use self- talk and the principles of emotional intelligence to develop and identified area of emotional competence.
