Barbara Shenstone, director of operations for UNRWA in the West Bank, yesterday planted an olive tree in the village of Burin, south of Nablus, in support of a project to create jobs and ‘green’ the local area, which sits close to the Israeli settlement of Yitzar.

Newly appointed Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, Mr Filippo Grandi, will visit Syria from 21 to 23 February. He will be accompanied by Ms Margot Ellis, the new Deputy Commissioner-General.


Students in north Lebanon celebrate graduation

Today 36 Palestine refugee students celebrated their graduation from UNRWA's North Vocational Training Centre in Lebanon. Around 80 per cent have already found employment, helping their community recover from the 2007 Nahr el-Bared camp conflict.

At a signing ceremony in Dheisheh refugee camp today, US Consul General Daniel Rubinstein announced an initial US contribution of $40 million to UNRWA.


UAE Red Crescent to send food for Gaza flood victims

The United Arab Emirates Red Crescent yesterday despatched to Gaza a convoy of sugar and flour worth 2 million dirhams (approximately $540,000) in response to an urgent appeal by UNRWA for food to ease the plight of refugees in Gaza.
