Biscay Regional Government of Spain contributes EUR 115,000 to UNRWA’s Syria humanitarian response plan

The Biscay regional government of Spain has contributed nearly EUR 115,000 to the Syria humanitarian response plan of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides urgent humanitarian assistance to up to 350,000 Palestine refugees and others affected by the conflict in Syria.

Yarmouk refugee camp is reportedly calm after days of intense fighting that led to the displacement of tens of thousands of Palestine refugees. Unconfirmed information by a small number of refugees that visited the camp today indicated the disappearance of armed opposition elements.

The conflict in Syria continues to escalate throughout the country, with 5,271 internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently sheltering in UNRWA facilities across the country as of 18 December—doubling the 2,631 persons reported doing so on 6 December. In the last 24 hours, clashes and shelling have been reported around Hama, Homs, and Aleppo, but the camps themselves remain relatively calm and UNRWA facilities operational.

Intensive clashes have reportedly encroached on Yarmouk, Damascus from surrounding areas, resulting in large numbers of refugees becoming displaced and attempting to flee the area. Numerous casualties have been reported and the Agency is currently assessing reported damage to one of its schools by shelling.
