Occasional clashes continue within Yarmouk and the surrounding areas, but residents are now able to enter and exit the camp. All UNRWA facilities remain closed. There are reports of at least eight Palestine refugees killed yesterday.

Damascus and the surrounding area: Airstrikes, shelling and intensive clashes occurred throughout the night and continued throughout the day in the area surrounding Yarmouk camp with shells impacting in UNRWA schools causing damage and casualties. 12 are reported dead and several others injured.

As people around the world prepare for the New Year, the armed conflict in Syria and its detrimental effect on civilians continues. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) continues to assist many Palestine refugees affected by the conflict by supporting them with cash, food and other essential supplies.

Damascus and the surrounding areas –Yarmouk camp is reportedly calm and some refugees are now attempting to salvage items from their homes. Thus far, the situation remains uncertain and unsafe enough to deter significant numbers of refugees from returning to their homes. Two UNRWA clinics were looted yesterday and all facilities in the camp remain closed. UNRWA staff have been advised not to enter for any reason.

This week’s Christmas holiday has not lessened the violence in Syria nor has it brought a positive change in negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition groups. As of 25 December, 5,775 Syrians and Palestine refugees seeking safety were being accommodated in UNRWA school buildings and the Agency's Vocational Training Centre in Damascus.



Japan donates additional USD 2 million to UNRWA

The Government of Japan has contributed an additional USD 2 million to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) emergency work in the Gaza Strip. This donation comes in response to the Agency’s call for support for Palestine refugees recovering from the recent violence.


UNRWA Syria crisis situation update,(Issue 25)

News reports quoted Zakarai al-Agha, Director-General of the refugee department at the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) as saying, "We have asked the Syrian authorities not to let Palestinians be drawn into the conflict”.He was also quoted as saying that over 700 Palestinians have been killed in the Syria conflict. UNRWA is not in a position to confirm this number.

Yarmouk refugee camp is reportedly calm after days of intense fighting that led to the displacement of tens of thousands of Palestine refugees. Unconfirmed information by a small number of refugees that visited the camp today indicated the disappearance of armed opposition elements.
