I come before you as a representative of UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East. As you know, UNRWA was established 60 years ago as a temporary agency to provide relief and support to refugees (approx 700,000 in number at the time) who had fled historic Palestine and lost their livelihoods between 1946 and 1948 in the conflict that accompanied the creation of the State of Israel.


World Water Day: Running Dry in the West Bank

Many areas of the West Bank suffer from a chronic lack of water, especially during the hot and dry summer season. The lack of water results from a combination of a natural depletion of water resources and a competition for water with Israeli settlements in the West Bank where water frequently flows in abundance to water farms, gardens and swimming pools.

Barbara Shenstone, director of operations for UNRWA in the West Bank, yesterday planted an olive tree in the village of Burin, south of Nablus, in support of a project to create jobs and ‘green’ the local area, which sits close to the Israeli settlement of Yitzar.
