Summer Games photo exhibit opens in Washington, DC

Washington, DC

In support of UNRWA’s Summer Games, American Friends of UNRWA (AFU) will be presenting the photo exhibit, “Summer Games in Gaza,” in Washington, DC on 5 August. The exhibit was first held in the fall of 2010 at the UN General Assembly and was opened by the former head of UNRWA operations in Gaza, John Ging. The exhibit’s Washington, DC appearance is sponsored by the office of Congressman Keith Ellison and will be held in the Rayburn House Building.

The photo exhibit features extraordinary and uplifting images of Gazan children enjoying their Summer Games, and also features information about the hardships faced by the people of Gaza. UNRWA’s Summer Games is an unprecedented initiative in its nature and scale that brings joy, education and relief to some 250,000 children in the Gaza Strip. Children participate in a wide variety of sports, arts and crafts, theatre, music and folklore activities.

Perhaps most exciting is the number of successful world record attempts the children make every year. Featured in the exhibit are photographs of children breaking the record for most kites flown simultaneously and most basketballs dribbled. The positive effect these events have had on the self-esteem of Gazsan children is profound.

The exhibit takes place on 5 August in the Gold Room, located inside the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill. This event is free, open to the public, and runs from 11am to 5pm.
