UNRWA has received a contribution from Human Appeal International, an Emirati NGO based in the Emirate of Ajman, to construct nine classrooms in Al Durj Primary School in Gaza City. The classrooms will be open for students in the coming 2012/2013 scholastic year.
Welcoming this contribution, Mr Peter Ford, Representative of the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, said: “This generous contribution from Human Appeal International will not only provide for better education for the children of Gaza, but it also marks the start of what looks to set to be a very promising partnership for the benefit of Palestine refugees.”
UNRWA educates some 218,000 children in Gaza in 243 schools, many of which suffer from overcrowding and run-down premises as rapid population growth rates have increased demand on UNRWA schools. To address this, UNRWA with the support of its generous donors has embarked on a plan to construct additional schools and classrooms across the Gaza Strip.
