“Ryad Mansi saved my life”, says Mohammad Hussein, as he shakes the hand of the UNRWA social worker in Cyber City, where nearly 200 Palestine refugees from Syria are being housed in Northern Jordan.
“Ryad visits me four times a week to check up on myself, my wife, and my four children”, explains Mohammad, who arrived in Cyber City from the Homs refugee camp in central Syria in April of this year.
Wounded in the conflict in Syria
Mohammad was wounded on two separate occasions when violence flared up in the camp and he had ventured into the streets to assist the wounded and dying. In one incident, he was hit in the leg by sniper fire, which meant he could barely walk.
“With all these wounds, I realised I was becoming a burden on my family and friends”, he adds, “but eventually I was able to make it into Jordan.”
Once there, with financial support from the Jordanian Engineering Association, Mohammad was able to visit a private hospital to receive surgery on his leg. Today, with the help of a crutch, he can walk.
Helping Palestine refugees from Syria to find support
UNRWA contributes to the efforts of the Jordanian government under the supervision of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) by bringing assistance to those sheltering in Cyber City. In addition to the support from UNRWA social workers like Ryad Mansi, UNRWA has a specialist protection officer working with vulnerable residents on a range of issues.
Mohammad lives in a small room with his wife, three daughters, and son. They use communal kitchens and bathrooms, which can give rise to tensions.
But Mohammad has no doubt about what the future holds. “Things are not great here”, he says. “As soon as possible, I want to go back to Syria with my family and rebuild my house and my life.”
