Publications

UNRWA’s publications cover many different areas, from socio-economic reports to appeals, newsletters, strategy documents and UN resolutions. This archive, dating back to 2000, contains useful information for researchers, partners and members of the public.

Nearly surrounded by the Israeli Barrier, this small refugee community is finding it increasingly difficult to support itself, physically and economically. The effect is increased hardship and uncertainty for the people of Aida.

This is Ashjan’s grandmother. The life of the family is fragmented and difficult. Since 2002, her father has lived in exile in Jordan, and her mother divides her time between Jordan and Bethlehem. Ashjan’s two brothers are both in prison in Israel.

Aida resident Ashjan Abu Srour works as a policewoman for the Palestinian Authority, and loves it. Ashjan says that in Aida camp, people do not rely on UNRWA’s help. “Here, the community helps itself.”

Abu Mahmoud, 58, runs a small shop in the camp. A trained electrician, Abu Mahmoud is teaching his son the same skills, in the hope of boosting the 28-year-old’s chances of employment.

At 43 per cent, unemployment is a problem in Aida. Many residents of the camp used to work in Israel, and have been badly affected by restrictions on access to the Israeli labour market.
