UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl visited Brussels from 2 to 4 June and met with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Catherine Ashton, the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Štefan Füle, and the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva, as well as other senior EU officials. He briefed the 28 ambassadors of the EU Political and Security Committee. During his visit, the Commissioner-General signed a joint declaration on EU support for UNRWA for the period 2014-2016, under which the EU will contribute some EUR 246 million (US$ 335 million) to the Agency’s General Fund, supporting core services such as the schools attended by half a million children and the 138 health clinics that treat 25,000 patients each day.

The Commissioner-General also met with senior officials in the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss cooperation between Belgium and UNRWA.
