18 June 2013
With nearly 400 participants, the second annual American Friends of UNRWA (AFU) Gaza Solidarity 5K Walk/Run in Washington, DC, on 8 June, was a huge hit! The event raised over US$ 92,000 – nearly double what was raised at last year’s 5K event – for UNRWA’s psychosocial support programme, which provides counselling to Gazan children suffering from PTSD and other psychological trauma. These funds will help more than 3,000 children in Gaza access the summertime counselling they need.
Participants came from all walks of life, but all were running with the children of Gaza on their minds. As one participant, Guillermo, said: "The children need all the help they can get, because while you don‘t see it in the news, their suffering is going on every day." To see why others participated in the event, check out the video below.

AFU would like to thank all of the participants and sponsors: Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Consolidated Contractors Company, Qatar Foundation International, Bank of Palestine, Embassy of Qatar, Embassy of Turkey, Azzad Asset Management, ANERA, United Palestinian Appeal, the Institute for Palestine Studies and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.
