Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bob Carr and UNRWA Commissioner-General Filippo Grandi signed a nearly AUD 90 million (USD 90 million) partnership agreement in support of UNRWA‘s core programmes throughout the Middle East over the course of the next five years.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Canberra, Grandi said, "Australia is a good example of a donor increasing its overall long-term contribution to UNRWA in a way that is sustainable and predictable. This agreement demonstrates the principles of good donorship and is an example that I hope will be replicated by others.

"The five-year agreement with Australia provides steadfast financial support in a difficult global economic climate. Australia‘s backing over the next years will help UNRWA provide education to refugee children throughout the region, as well as health and relief services."

Australia was the 10th largest donor to UNRWA in 2011, with an annual contribution to the Agency’s core programme of around USD 15 million. The new agreement will result in a progressive increase of this amount up to USD 20 million per year.

Background Information

UNRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the UNRWA Programme Budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall,  projected for 2016 to stand at US$ 81 million. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.
