The Regional Government of Valencia in Spain has announced a contribution of EUR 320,000 to promote mother-and-child health for Palestine refugees.

The donation will help the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to provide health services for mothers and their infants, including pre-natal, delivery, and post-natal care. The funds will also support the immunisation of children aged 12 to 18 months.

This latest donation brings Valencia’s total contributions for UNRWA to nearly two million euros, helping the most vulnerable Palestine refugees to live long and healthy lives. This includes EUR 628,845 for programmes in Gaza and one million euros in the West Bank.

Beyond financial support, the regional government raises awareness of the plight of Palestine refugees at home. A three-year Project in Valencia schools aims to improve knowledge about the humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Background information:

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. UNRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency assistance. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions.

UNRWA’s Spanish Comittee works to support UNRWA’s humanitarian programmes and to raise awareness within Spanish society of the situation facing Palestine refugees.

Financial support to UNRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting UNRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the deficit stands at US$ 56 million.
