UNRWA began a project to promote human rights education in its schools in 2000.
The programme promotes non-violence, healthy communication skills, conflict resolution and human rights. It also emphasizes the importance of tolerance and good citizenship.
These systematic efforts have reached every Agency school and include:
The project trains Palestine refugee children and young people in non-violence, healthy communication skills and conflict resolution, including the promotion of peer mediation techniques in the West Bank and Gaza.
It strengthens and supports our efforts to supplement existing curricular materials, and covers all UNRWA schools in the five fields.
In Gaza, we have developed a dedicated human rights curriculum.
Specialists from UNRWA, the Red Cross, human rights NGOs and the wider academic community developed the comprehensive curriculum, anchored in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. All of our over 200,000 students have a dedicated human rights lesson each week.

The programme was also expanded to include vocational training centres, where workshops promote awareness among the students and instructors of basic concepts of human rights, tolerance and conflict resolution.
The project has been extended to the Agency’s university-level educational science faculties in the West Bank and Jordan. It enables second-year students to learn about and practice their rights during university and to take part in the student parliament.
Human rights promotion is part of the UNRWA Institute of Education’s in-service training courses in the five fields of operations. Trainee teachers learn to integrate human rights into their teaching. The programme raises awareness among teaching staff and school leaders of methods for promoting tolerance and human rights.
