UNRWA Photo Competition 2014

Every day that the blockade continues and new raids are carried out, we are overwhelmed by a flood of numbers: how many dead, how many wounded, how many victims. The morning headlines are brimming with the number of dead, injured and displaced.

I Am Not a Statistic

I Am Not a Statistic

Every day that the blockade continues and new raids are carried out, we are overwhelmed by a flood of numbers: how many dead, how many wounded, how many victims. The morning headlines are brimming with the number of dead, injured and displaced.
Numbers and statistics strip their owners of their identities and their humanity. The people who make up the statistics are lost in the numbers. Statistics cannot express fear when the house shakes from artillery bombardment and they do not feel pain when loved ones are killed. But the people behind the numbers feel, fear, love and mourn.
Behind each number is a story that is not told in the headlines. The stories are of lives cut short, of dreams scattered by shell fragments and forced displacement, or incinerated by the flames of war.
Being a refugee does not make you a statistic. The exiles living in diaspora are not numbers. The dreams of Palestine refugees cannot be fit into a chart.

You are not a statistic
