29 October 2019

Between 27-29 October 2019, the Human Rights, Conflict Resolution and Tolerance (HRCRT) Education programme of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) held an agency-wide ‘Human Rights Enhancement and Enrichment’ workshop in Amman, Jordan. The workshop, organized and facilitated by the UNRWA education programme, was implemented to support HRCRT implementation staff across UNRWA fields of operation. The workshop aimed at maximizing the HRCRT programme’s impact and ensure coherence within the programme through discussion and resolution development. Workshop participants shared field implementation updates, planned content for the upcoming school year and provided feedback on how to streamline the student parliamentarian election process.

In 1999, UNRWA introduced human rights studies into its curriculum and as of  2012, the Agency developed a human rights and tolerance policy to update and harmonize UNRWA human rights education across the Middle East. In addition to this, an HRCRT toolkit was developed as a practical guide for UNRWA teachers to help them create and sustain a culture of human rights in their classrooms and schools. The Agency’s HRCRT policy and toolkit play a vital role in encouraging Palestine refugee students to actively engage their rights, including through school parliamentarian elections. The HRCRT toolkit also serves to encourage students to feel proud of their cultural identity and to contribute to their communities in a positive way. A key component of the HRCRT programme includes the student-elected Agency-wide student parliament.
