The Minister of Education of the Republic of Slovenia, Jernej Pikalo, visited the West Bank Palestine Refugee camp of Am’ari on 24 May. Mr. Pikalo was accompanied by a delegation from the UN Relief and Works Agency, including Deputy Director of UNRWA Operations in the West Bank David Hutton.

During a tour of the UNRWA Am’ari Girls’ School, Mr. Pikalo was briefed on the current status of education in the Agency’s schools by Wahid Jubran, an UNRWA education official. He then met with the school parliament and engaged in lively discussion with its representatives. The young women spoke about the daily challenges they face living in the camp.

The visit to the school was followed by a walking tour of the camp, led by Yousef Hushiyeh, Chief Area Officer of the Jerusalem area. Mr. Pikalo observed UNRWA services in action throughout Am’ari. He also spoke with Palestine refugees, listening to their accounts of life in the camps and the problems facing them.

Minister Pikalo expressed his gratitude for the tour, saying: “Slovenia is a country which gives a lot of attention to education, and we will be happy to share our experience with refugee communities in Palestine.”
