Supporting Palestinian refugees

22 December 2010

In a recent poll, Palestinians rated the European Union (EU) and UNRWA among the top international and local organisations in the help they provided to the Palestinian people. In fact, the EU is the largest provider of international assistance to the Palestinian people, and to Palestine refugees in particular.

Over the last decade, the EU has provided more than EUR€1 billion of support to UNRWA and nearly 5 million Palestine refugees.

More than any other partner, the EU makes it possible for UNRWA to carry out its human development work in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Different types of EU support for UNRWA include an annual contribution to support UNRWA‘s main programmes, emergency humanitarian assistance, and support for specific projects, such as vocational training. Different EU countries also sponsor a variety of programmes.
