Japan Contributes US$ 33.2 Million to UNRWA in Support of Palestine Refugees

The Government of Japan contributed US$ 33.2 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in support of Palestine refugees. The agreement was signed by the Japanese Ambassador for Palestinian Affairs and Representative of Japan to Palestine, Mr. Yoichi Nakashima, and UNRWA Commissioner-General, Mr. Philippe Lazzarini and is an early supplemental disbursement, taking into account the financial needs of the Agency.
“Over the past 70 years, Japan has stood with Palestine refugees and supported their aspirations for a better future. This contribution will help UNRWA provide basic services to families in need,” said Ambassador Yoichi Nakashima.
This critical contribution allows UNRWA to continue providing core services – including healthcare and education – to millions of Palestine refugees across its five fields of operation and support the Agency’s Emergency Appeals for Syria, Lebanon and Jordan and the occupied Palestinian territory.
“The doubling of Japan's support - the year we celebrate 70 years of partnership - is a clear demonstration of its unwavering commitment to the wellbeing and rights of Palestine refugees. This generous contribution brings hope and stability to one of the most destitute communities in the Middle East,” said UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.
The Government of Japan is a dedicated donor to UNRWA, having supported the Agency since 1953. In 2022, the Government of Japan was the 6th largest contributor to the Agency. It is thanks to the enduring support of donors like the Government of Japan, that UNRWA is able to provide vital services to Palestine refugees across the Middle East in the face of its continuing financial challenges.
UNRWA is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. The United Nations General Assembly established UNRWA in 1949 with a mandate to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to registered Palestine refugees in the Agency’s area of operations pending a just and lasting solution to their plight.
UNRWA operates in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, The Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
Tens of thousands of Palestine refugees who lost their homes and livelihoods due to the 1948 conflict continue to be displaced and in need of support, nearly 75 years on.
UNRWA helps Palestine Refugees achieve their full potential in human development through quality services it provides in education, health care, relief and social services, protection, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance, and emergency assistance. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions.
