They are historically one of the poorest people in the country. Latest surveys show that more than 90 per cent of Palestine refugees live in poverty. United as One: A Song of Hope and Determination

All 23 students who participated in this project are members of the 2018/2019 UNRWA Agency-wide Student Parliament representing the voices of over half a million Palestine refugee girls and boys studying in more than 700 schools operated by the Agency in Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. The idea was born during a November 2018 workshop when the student parliamentarians, frustrated at their limited opportunities for self-expression, articulated an interested in using music to make their voices heard around the world.

Narine has a visual impairment and receives regular assistance at school from the UNRWA Learning Support Assistant (LSA), Sanaa Hourani (right). “I like to go to school in person. My favourite part is mathematics and the support sessions with my teacher, Sanaa. Going to school is better than remote learning because I find the worksheets difficult. Mohammad Abu Ayyash has been an environmental health laborer with UNRWA for thirteen years. “Some people don’t mind when we tell them not to dispose of facemasks in the street, others don’t like it. People look to UNRWA and rely on our services.” He adds, “The camp population has increased which has also increased our workload. There’s a need for more laborers.” The Agency hired an additional five sanitation staffers in response to Balata camp’s COVID-19 response. “We disinfect the houses of those who are infected and quarantined. Quality Care in Uncertain Times: EU enables frontline UNRWA health response to Coronavirus

As the largest contributor to the Agency’s health programme, EU support enables the provision of critical health equipment and medicines for Palestine refugees. UNRWA HQ in Amman, Jordan executes the planning and ordering of supply for the 3.5 million Palestine refugees who rely on UNRWA for health care with EU support. From Amman, supplies are shipped to the West Bank through Ashdod port, Ben Gurion Airport, and/or the Sheikh or King Hussein Bridges on the border with Jordan. Meet Obaida: An Engineer in the Making

“I’m very happy that UNRWA schools opened on time this year. If they hadn’t, I wouldn’t have been able to register in a private school and I would be on the street,” explains Obaida, an UNRWA student from Deir Qasi School in Saida, Lebanon. Bidding farewell to a summer spent playing football with his two brothers, Obaida carefully organises his books, pens and school supplies in preparation for the year ahead. After a healthy breakfast of fruit, cheese and a few dates, eager Obaida makes his way to school.

Ibthal Abu Libda, 24, is a student at the UNRWA Faculty of Educational Sciences (RMTC) and is implementing her graduate thesis on building English language skills of elementary school students. She has worked as an UNRWA English teacher for more than a year and is currently a substitute at an elementary school in Ramallah where she introduced an innovative approach to language learning through focused study of the alphabet and a reliance on simple self-designed tools like colourful cards and activity worksheets. “Our professors focused on developing teaching methods and comparing them to old ones, especially Mr. Osama Abul Baha, who helped me build my graduation thesis, as well as others. I am thankful because for each stage in my life, I had a number of influencers to guide me through my career and I am grateful to them all” Ibtihal said. “. .

He took out his first loan in 2007, for 15,000 SYP, approximately US$ 300 USD at the time, to allow him to expand his business. Marka camp, referred to by the Jordanian government as Hitten, was established in 1968 on an area of 0.92 sq km, 10 km north-east of Amman. Many camp residents are Palestine refugees originally from the Gaza Strip, who lack legal status in Jordan and are denied many of the basic services and rights afforded to pre-1967 refugees, including government employment and health care. Jawad’s eldest son has already obtained a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, but has not yet been able to find a job.

In 2014, the besieged suburb of Yarmouk became a symbol of civilian suffering. As of January 2015, 18,000 Palestine refugees remain trapped in the area. Ongoing insecurity has prevented UNRWA from completing a food distribution since 6 December 2014.
