Infinite Laughs and Smiles: EU Fun Days in Lebanon
What do you get when you combine super-speed bumper cars, zip lining through nature, sack races and dozens of summer activities with 1,200 sixth-grade UNRWA students? A minimum of 1,200 laughs and smiles with an infinite maximum!
Throughout August, students from across the five regions of Lebanon –North, Beirut, Saida, Tyre and Beqaa- took part in the first ever European Union (EU) Fun Days organized in the host country.
Students from Beirut, North, Saida and Tyre areas spent the day at Arnaoon, a hilltop retreat where they enjoyed rope-walking through the trees, mountain biking, go-carting and group activities such as sack and wheelbarrow races. Beqaa students went to Jebjannine Wonderland – an amusement park in West Beqaa, where they rode the ferris wheel, flying chairs, tea cups, carousel, a miniature train and enjoyed the climbing maze.
The EU Fun Days initiative is an all-time kid favorite, providing our students with a unique opportunity for some fresh air and fun with friends during the off-months of the school semester. The European Union is the primary champion of the Agency’s education programme, constantly supporting innovative opportunities that encourage the mental and physical welfare of Palestine refugee youth and children.
For the younger generation of Palestine refugees in Lebanon, especially Palestine refugees from Syria (PRS) who are currently displaced in the country, mobility and access to recreational spaces is often limited to the confines of their respective camp. Through the EU Fun Days programme this year, UNRWA was able to carve out safe recreational spaces throughout the summer for over 3,200 students from Lebanon and West Bank combined.
