Life in Jordan

Since the start of the conflict in Syria, UNRWA has been caring for and providing critical humanitarian assistance to over 14,000 Palestinian refugees who have fled to Jordan. These refugees are a highly marginalized group because, unlike Syrian refugees, many lack legal status in Jordan. The large majority live in poverty and endure a considerable degree of insecurity. Many have suffered the trauma of being displaced multiple times in their lives.  

In 2014, UNRWA has received financial and/or in-kind contributions from the United Kingdom (DFID), the United States (the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration of the Department of State), Belgium, the European Commission Humanitarian Affairs and Civil Protection, Help Syria through the Winter Foundation (HSTTW), Human Appeal International (HAI), Education Above All Foundation (Qatar), the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and UNICEF to assist these vulnerable refugees. An additional US$ 11.6 million is urgently needed to extend this humanitarian assistance until the end of the year.
