American Friends of UNRWA Organizes Gaza Solidarity 5K in San Francisco

The American Friends of UNRWA (URNWA USA),  invites you to join the 2013 Gaza Solidarity 5K Walk/Run on 5 October 2013 in San Francisco, CA. This family-friendly 5K, with a 1-mile walk option, provides a unique opportunity for people living in the United States to show their solidarity with the children of Gaza.
Funds raised through the Gaza Solidarity 5K Walk/Run will help the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) provide psychosocial counselling to children in Gaza through its Community Mental Health Programme. Many children in Gaza suffer from PTSD and other psychological traumas – a 2010 survey found that a full 80 per cent showed signs of unusually deep anxiety and sadness.
To register for the Gaza Solidarity 5K, please visit:  If you can’t make it to San Francisco for the race, you can still show your support by clicking here to donate to the event, or by spreading the word.  You can also click here to share the event on Facebook.
UNRWA USA organizes the 5K with the support of its generous sponsors:  the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and its chapter in Orange County, CA (ADC and ADC-OC), the Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS), the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC), the Arab Cultural and Community Center (ACCC), Arab America and the Nashashibi family.
UNRWA USA is an independent non-profit organization that provides support for UNRWA humanitarian work through advocacy, fundraising and education. UNRWA USA aims to educate the general American public about the situation of Palestine refugees and generate support for UNRWA programmes in the Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. US taxpayers are eligible for tax deductions for donations made through UNRWA USA.

Background Information

UNRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the UNRWA Programme Budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall. UNRWA encourages all Member States to work collectively to exert all possible efforts to fully fund the Agency’s Programme Budget. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.
