The Swiss Ambassador in Jordan Mrs Andrea Reichlin today opened the newly equipped computer lab and internet café in the women’s programme centre in Baqa’a camp.

“Switzerland sincerely hopes that these tools are strengthening the capacity of the women to engage in future even more effectively in the economic and social domain,” Mrs Reichlin said at the opening ceremony of the lab.

The director of UNRWA operations in Jordan Ms Sandra Mitchell said: “UNRWA presents its deepest appreciation to the former president of Switzerland Ms Doris Leuthard, and to the SDC for the generous donation which will contribute to equipping the Palestine refugees in the camp with the computer skills needed by today’s job seekers.”

President of Switzerland visit to Baqa’a camp in October 2010

In October 2010, the former president of Switzerland Ms Doris Leuthard paid a visit to Baqa’a camp, which hosts more than 100,000 Palestine refugees and is considered the largest in the region.

During the president’s visit to the camp, she confirmed Switzerland‘s dedication to education for Palestine refugees, which resulted in establishing a multipurpose Swiss wing in Baqa’a preparatory school with the contribution of around CHF 1 million.

The President also visited the women’s centre and was impressed with the great work carried out in the field of education and community development.

As a gesture of her support to the centre, the president donated five laptops for the use of the centre and the SDC equipped the computer lab with computers and IT equipments.

Switzerland has been a keen supporter of UNRWA for more than 60 years ago, contributing through SDC CHF 10 million to UNRWA’s General Fund, with the aim of improving the refugees’ living conditions and ensuring their access to basic services.

Background Information

UNRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the UNRWA Programme Budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall. UNRWA encourages all Member States to work collectively to exert all possible efforts to fully fund the Agency’s Programme Budget. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.
