UAE Red Crescent Assists 14,000 Gazans During Ramadan

06 August 2013

A generous contribution of US$ 500,000 from the Red Crescent Society of the United Arab Emirates (UAERC) enabled the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to provide refugees in Gaza with food assistance, beginning in the holy month of Ramadan.
The UAERC contribution helped provide food baskets containing flour, sugar, rice, oil and milk to more than 14,000 refugees from 2,500 families in Gaza. The beneficiaries, selected from among the recipients of the UNRWA Social Safety Net programme, are among the poorest of refugees.
The Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Filippo Grandi, welcomed the UAERC contribution. He said: “This contribution is welcome not only because of Ramadan, but also because it comes at a time of increasing economic difficulties in Gaza, due to the continuing blockade and the recent closure of many of the tunnels linking Gaza to Egypt.”
The UAERC has been a regular supporter of UNRWA and Palestine refugees. Since 2008, the UAERC has contributed over US$ 25 million for food assistance, construction projects and medication, and has also sponsored Palestine refugee orphans in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria.

Background Information

UNRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the UNRWA Programme Budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall. UNRWA encourages all Member States to work collectively to exert all possible efforts to fully fund the Agency’s Programme Budget. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.
