  • On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, UNRWA promotes inclusion and leadership
    On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) reaffirms its commitment to promoting the rights of Palestine refugees with disabilities through its programmes and services and empower them to participate fully in decisions that affect their lives.

    The Advisory Commission on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) met in Jordan on 25-26 November where it held strategic discussions concerning the Agency and the challenges it faces in providing services to millions of Palestine refugees in the Gaza Strip and West Bank (including East Jerusalem), Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

    On 23 October, the UNRWA Gaza Training Centre (GTC) welcomed a delegation from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), a long-time a strategic partner of the Agency. As UNRWA continues to develop its vocational training programmes to improve the chances of Palestine refugees to compete in local labour markets, UNRWA – with GIZ support - has been able to provide innovative sector training, such as installation and maintenance of photovoltaic systems.     UNRWA is reiterating its call for gender equality and ending gender based violence under the theme “Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV)”.

    On 15 November, Member States in the Special Political and Decolonization Committee of the General Assembly adopted the four annual draft resolutions that relate to UNRWA. The resolution “Assistance to Palestine Refugees” contained our mandate renewal, from the period 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2023, and was voted on by 170 Member States. This is one of the highest majority votes in the General Assembly.

    The 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is a good time to pause and reflect upon what the convention has meant for the protection of Palestine refugee* children who live in the occupied Palestinian territory today
