UNRWA thanks Kuwaiti ambassador for consistent supportPeter Ford, Representative of the Commissioner-General of UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees), called on Sheikh Faisal Al-Humoud Al-Malek Al-Sabah, Ambassador of Kuwait to Jordan, to thank him at the end of his period of service in Amman for his consistent support for the Agency.

During Sheikh Faisal’s period as Ambassador, His Highness the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, donated US$34 million to UNRWA’s 2009 Gaza Appeal. The government of Kuwait donated US$1.5 million to the Agency’s regular budget each year, and numerous convoys from Kuwait with aid for the people of Gaza were sent via Amman and UNRWA. In addition, steps are under way in New York for Kuwait to be invited to join UNRWA’s Advisory Commission, which comprises donors and the main countries hosting Palestinian refugees. Kuwait will be the second Arab donor after Saudi Arabia to take on the responsibilities of membership of the Commission.

On behalf of the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Mr Filippo Grandi, Mr Ford thanked Sheikh Faisal Al-Humoud for his exemplary support and wished him well in the future.

Background Information

UNRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. UNRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the UNRWA Programme Budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall. UNRWA encourages all Member States to work collectively to exert all possible efforts to fully fund the Agency’s Programme Budget. UNRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.

UNRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. UNRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.
