In May 2007, the Palestine refugee camp Nahr el-Bared, Lebanon, was witness to a violent conflict between the Lebanese Armed Forces and the extremist group Fatah al-Islam. Some 27,000 inhabitants of the camp and its outskirts were displaced during the violence. The camp and the UNRWA compound, housing six schools, a health centre, community centres and more, were destroyed.
Over the past three years, and with the help of the European Union, UNRWA has embarked on an unprecedented reconstruction effort in the camp. Until the reconstruction is complete, the agency is also providing temporary housing assistance, food and health support, education and economic recovery measures for the 5,333 families temporarily displaced.
