Seize the opportunity – International Women’s Day 2015

13 May 2015

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2015, UNRWA in Lebanon produced the documentary ‘Seize the Opportunity, Make a Difference’.

The short film sheds light on challenges and opportunities for marginalized women and girls in Palestine refugee camps in Lebanon. The stories of Wafaa and Maya, two Palestine refugee women from Burj Barajneh camp in Lebanon, are a testament to the potential of women and show how this potential can be strengthened through effective community-driven empowerment programmes.

These empowerment programmes are carried out by UNRWA to strengthen the capacity of Palestine refugee women to be active participants in their families and communities. Each year, around 500 women and girls graduate with vocational training from eight independent community-based women programme centres supported technically and financially by UNRWA. Access to these opportunities is ensured for women registered with the UNRWA Social Safety Net Programme, which supports the most vulnerable refugee households.
