Death, destruction, poverty and despair increasingly characterise Gaza's present situation. Gaza's children and youth -- 50% of the total population -- are particularly vulnerable. Young Gazans have few or no outlets for recreation, particularly during the long summer months.
In 2007, UNRWA responded on an unprecedented scale. Summer Games 2007 -- planned within 3 months and launched one week after the brutal factional violence of June 2007 subsided -- provided a series of recreational and educational activities across 10 weeks for almost 200,000 children and youth.
