UNRWA – Empowering Palestine refugees with disabilities to be leaders on inclusion

03 December 2018

International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated annually on 3 December and UNRWA is joining worldwide celebrations in Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and West Bank. In 2018, the global theme highlights the importance of persons with disabilities as leaders in promoting inclusion: “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”.

The theme is aligned with the slogan “nothing for us without us” and highlights the importance of persons with disabilities as leaders in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in an inclusive manner. Despite all the challenges experienced in 2018, UNRWA stood strong and continued to work towards promoting the rights of persons with disabilities.

Our teams have worked together to ensure that UNRWA is fulfilling the Agenda 2030’s commitment of “leaving no one behind”. Among our focuses this year are the work on improving disability disaggregated data collection and improving the capacity of our staff to promote disability-inclusive services. These successes have paved the way to the next steps to be taken. UNRWA will continue to work alongside Palestine refugees with disabilities, ensuring they are an essential part of our disability inclusion efforts.
