Yarmouk: Desperation they never thought possible
17 June 2015
When UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl visited Yarmouk camp in March 2015, he could already see the suffering and hunger etched into people's faces. The situation became even more critical in this Damascus residential area – where some 18,000 people had already been trapped for over two years – when it was engulfed by intense fighting on 1 April 2015. A lack of security means UNRWA is unable to access to the camp to deliver life-saving humanitarian assistance, but the Agency continues to deliver assistance to Palestine refugees and other civilians who have been displaced to surrounding areas. UNRWA remains deeply concerned for both the civilians who are still inside the camp and those who have been displaced to neighboring areas.
