Despite their presence in Lebanon for over 60 years, Palestinians are still considered foreigners under Lebanese
laws and denied many fundamental rights. This has left many Palestinians unfamiliar with how the legal system
works and there is no effective pro bono service to help the Palestinians to see justice done. In response to this
situation, UNRWA launched its first legal aid project in Lebanon in April 2010 funded by the government of
the Netherlands. Involving local non-governmental organizations, UNRWA and in collaboration with the Public
Interest and Advocacy Centre Lebanon (PINACLE) has been put in charge of identifying the lawyers willing to
partake in the project.
