What We Do

Education
Education
Our students are among the most highly educated in the region. Since the 1960s, girls have made up around half of UNRWA students.

RCVI is a unique centre in Gaza that provides rehabilitation and education services to all visually impaired children in the Gaza strip. The school offers blind or visually impaired children early intervention and subsequent integration into mainstream schools.

The Centre offers rehabilitation, education, eye screenings and academic integration programs to children aged between 4-12 years who live with varying degrees of visual impairment. RCVI, which is the only center of its kind in the Gaza Strip, has been in operation since 1962. The centre currently benefits some 500 visually impaired children from all across the Gaza Strip.

Children with severely impaired visual acuity receive training on Braille with the aid of assistive devices like the Perkins writing machine. Low-vision students also receive specially tailored education courses aimed at helping them fully-integrate into regular public or private schools by the sixth grade. Recreational activities at RCVI are designed to give these special children a sense of normalcy despite their challenges.

Through its specialized education, rehabilitation, orientation and life skills classes, the RCVI has assisted thousands of visually impaired students in gaining the skills and the confidence they need to successfully navigate hurdles to education access and job opportunities in Gaza.

The RCVI is in need of crucial funding, particularly for specialized classroom assistants, rolls of braille paper and to cover the transportation costs of UNRWA buses that allow the children to access these services daily.

RCVI provides recreational activities to all students including arts, sports and music - each student is able to sing along in music class thanks to the braille book printed and provided to them

Everyday, low vision students like Smood have access to specialized educational materials such as visual aids and educational aids like tablets, movable desks, reading glasses, enlarged textbooks - whatever they need to increase their opportunity to learn

Adam and Munir are blind students at RCVI who are given rehabilitation and educational services through qualified and experienced staff. They are equipped with Perkins Braille writing machines, acoustic educational aids and white canes.
